Abide In Me

“Abide in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” John 15:4
As another school year comes to an end, teachers often carry a mixture of emotions- relief, exhaustion, gratitude, disappointment, joy, and uncertainty. Some students soared this year. Others struggled. Some lessons landed beautifully. Others felt like they disappeared into the air before they ever reached a child’s heart. Yet Jesus gives a simple invitation, “Abide in Me”. He’s not asking us to achieve, to prove, or to perform, but ABIDE.
In John 15, Jesus paints the picture of a vine and branches. A branch does not produce fruit by sheer effort. It remains connected to the vine, and fruit comes because of that connection. For an educator, especially at the end of a demanding year, this is reassurance. You were never asked to carry the entire weight of changing hearts and lives on your own. You planted seeds, spoke truth, and offered grace. You modeled Christ in thousands of ordinary moments as you tied their shoes, retaught math lessons, prayed with anxious students, corrected behavior with patience, and showed up day after day, even when you were tired. Some fruit you may never see this side of heaven, but God sees it all.
To abide means to remain, to stay near, and to rest in Christ’s presence even when the classroom is empty and the year is finished. Before you are a teacher, you are His. Before you are productive, you are loved. Summer can easily become another season of striving—planning, fixing, and preparing for next year. But first, Jesus is inviting you to abide. Rest without guilt, pray without rushing, and sit in God’s Word not to prepare a lesson but to simply hear your Savior speak to you. Do these things knowing that branches live by staying connected to the Vine. The beautiful promise of John 15 is that Christ abides with you, too. He was present in every chapel message, every hard parent meeting, and every moment you wondered if you were enough. He remains faithful even when you feel weary.
As the school year closes, may you remember that your worth is not measured by test scores or perfectly managed days. Your identity is rooted in Christ. Abide in Him and trust Him with the fruit.
Lord Jesus, Thank You for carrying us through another school year. Thank You for the students, families, coworkers, and moments that shaped us. When we are weary, remind us that we do not have to strive to earn Your love. Teach us to abide in You. Refresh our hearts this summer with Your grace, peace, and presence. Help us trust that You are at work even in the seeds we cannot yet see growing.
In Your name we pray, Amen
